Kenyan Evening Meal - 16-10-2010

Kenyan Evening Meal. The spitfire Explorer unit held another of their infamous meal evenings, this time the theme was Kenya. The unit was made up of 5  explorers and 4 scouts who are presently linking with the Spitfires, and with the invaluable help of Margaret, Badger and 2 mums assisting and giving advise to the young people work began at 10am. Firstly the hall was completely decorated with lots of Kenyan photo's, artwork and colourfull materials, transforming the hall completely. Next was the preparation of the vegetables, with 42 guests this was a mamouth task, but as they say many hands make light work. With a short break for lunch, everyone started in earnest with the preparation of the food for the 5 course meal, so much to do. But with good teamwork the meals began to take shape. Mid afternoon saw preparations well under way, and the table laying and decorating begin, by 5pm all that could be done at this stage had been completed, now was the time for the young people to taste the food they had been preparing all day by the look of the clean plates scrummy. Time to change into our smart clothes before our guests started to arrive, the first started arriving by 6-45, luckily everything was ready, the hall looking superb and the youngsters imaculate. Once the guests were greated and seated, the meal was underway, the young people became waiters and waitresses, serving up Mushroom Baskets firstly, this was followed by Fish Soup, next was the main course, Pork Kenyan Style, with seasonal vegetables, this was followed with Explorers Chocolate Surprise and finished off with mini mince pies, coffee or tea. During the course of the evening we held a quiz with a difference we had been lent many Kenyan articles which were passed round the tables to see if people could identify their uses, we also held a raffle with the 1st prize being a £50-00 soapstone rhino. We also had the Harambee articles for sale which went down well and also the Explorers handmade Christmas Cakes, Puddings and jars of Mincemeat. The funds made during the evening are all going to our Kenyan fund which was announced during the evening, it is our intention for the unit to travel to Kenya in August 2012 to help the project Harambee for Kenya, we will be assisting them with some form of  buillding work, or groundwork as well as helping the children, by either playing, reading and teaching them some of our own skills. We also gave out forms to raise more funds for our project in the form of a 100 club. During the course of the evening we also recieved 5 donations totaling £590-00. The meal and raffle raised a further £686-00, less costs of food,  equipment, decorations and raffle prizes leaving a profit of £209-00. Everyone agreed that the evening was a resounding sucess, the food highly praised, the tables and decorations excellant and the young people were highly praised for their friendlyness and good manners. Our gratitude goes to Margaret for all her hard work and thanks to Tracey, Jo and Roger for their help and support. Also many thanks to parents for their support as well.
