14th Bog Seat Challenge - 05-03-2010

14th Bog Seat Challenge news article

Four explorers attended this event over the weekend 27th to 28th of March at Ross Wood Campsite. On the Friday it had rained hard all day and night, we arrived 9-30 Sat morning and although it wasn’t raining by then, most of the camping areas were under water. We managed to find the driest site of them all (which was still boggy in areas). The hall had just been pumped out as it was under water. Briefing was at 11am with completion starting at 12. The theme was James Bond, Goldfishfinger wish missions of intelligence, skill, luck, shopping and seafood. Anyway our 4 mad but brave explorers set out to win as many casino chips as possible. With failure came a fate worse that death, presentation of THE Golden Bog Seat and the 'honour' that comes with it... To arrange the next one! Our intrepid lads 1st task was rifle shooting with moderate success. Next they watched 10 short clips and had to answer questions on them, they picked up 7 out of the 10 chips on offer. They next had to throw hats which had a wire mesh inside at balloons on a washing line, they picked up many chips here! It was off to the blackjack table next where the grouped happily squandered some chips (men)! Next was to the golf challenge where Joe shone and the group picked up many lovely points. This was followed by a fishing game with a twist. they had a paddling pool full of custard and fish spines/guts and they had to use there hands to find little shells ect. The last part was an assault course with a difference, the team had to carry a large black shark with the size and weight of a kayak round, through, under and over various obstacles. The course was waterlogged (more fun) and they were being timed. The explorers managed to get the quickest time of anyone before them; well done! As a team they worked together extremely well throughout all their challenges the assault course was something else! Then back to the hut for more questions and anagrams to unlock. At 3pm the points were added up and as a team they reached an amazing 165 chips which secured there place in the finals. At 4pm each of the finalists were given a task, one team at a time was allowed on the course. But first you had the opportune to spend you chips on equipment for the task. However no-one knew just exactly what the task was! so it was a difficult decision to know what to buy. In the end the lads purchased what they thought they might need. However no-one knew just exactly what the task was! so it was a difficult decision to know what to buy. The lads purchased what they thought they might need. Once they had purchased their items they proceeded to the task area which was on top of a big mound which was cordoned off at the bottom of the mound and about 2 foot ahead was a metal box which had to be brought back up to the top of the mound. With the equipment they had purchased, however the box had to be retrieved in no more than 5 minutes. They lashed three poles together and on the end tied a length of rope with a hook made out of tent pegs at the other end, much like a fishing rod! With only a few minutes left they repeatedly attempted to hook the boxes handle. However even with great determination of a Spitfire, they unfortunately failed to hook on. This left them going home from their first Bog Seat challenge with the fantastic second place, which we are all very proud of. For their fantastic efforts they will be treated to a carvery meal. They may have won the Battle of Britain, but this was a whole new battlefield!
